Procedure: this procedure includes replacement of a disfunctional bone narrow with healthy stem cells. The stem cells can be obtained from the patient itself, or a donor. If the patient is providing the stem cells, s/he takes daily injections to stimulate stem cell production in the bone narrow and move into blood stream. Then the stem cells are collected by a device that drains the blood and seperate it into different fractions. This method is called apheresis. If there’s a donor, the stem cells may be collected from either their blood or bone narrow.
Recovery time: recovery time depends on general condition of the patient before transplant and the side effects the patient has. Several weeks are expected for obtaining blood counts in the standard range. It can take up to a year before going back to daily life.
