Procedure: chest wall deformities can either be concavity of sternum (pectus excavatum) or a prominent sternum (pectus carinatum). Chest wall tumors also cause chest wall deformities. Treatment for pectus excavatum is mainly a thoracoscopic surgery which is performed by placing a bar behind the sternum that stays for 3 years, and then removed. Pectus carinatum is mostly asymptomatic, but when a treatment is needed options can either be surgery or external prosthetic bracing which is worn for 12 months. Treatment for chest wall tumors is dependent on the type and location of the tumor, and determined by the surgeon.
Recovery time: on average, pectus carinatum surgeries take about 6-8 weeks to recover. For pectus excavatum, placing the bars would need about 6 weeks to recover. After the surgery, the patients need to be careful with their daily activities.
